Lightning can damage your building in
more ways than just structurally. It
doesn't even have to be a direct strike on
the building or a nearby power line,
lightning can strike several hundred yards
away and still create large damaging voltage
"spikes", known as transients, which can
wreak havoc on internal electronics, motors,
etc.
Lightning is not the only source for
these over-voltages; several other sources
include the following:
Switching
of power circuits
Operation
of electrical circuits by neighboring
facilities
Operation
of power factor correction devices
Switching
and clearing of faults on transmission lines
In fact, 70-85% of all transients are
generated within one's own facility by the
switching of electrical loads such as
lights, heating/cooling systems, motors and
the operation of office equipment.
You can protect your equipment through
the use of Transient Voltage Surge
Suppression (TVSS).
A Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor is a
device inserted in the incoming power,
telephone lines, coaxial cabling (including
satellite entry), low voltage lines, etc.,
to prevent damage to electronic equipment
from these transients. Transients can
range from several hundred to several
thousand volts over what is an acceptable
range for electronic equipment. These
suppressors protect equipment by using MOV
(Metal Oxide Varistor) technology that
diverts the extra voltage by forming a
connection between the power line and the
grounding line, safely diverting the extra
voltage to ground.
The need for TVSS is shared by industrial
facilities, commercial buildings and
residential homes alike. All South
Lightning Protection, Inc., offers free
inspections for all types of building to
determine your needs.
